Cook hands-free with the voice assistant

Ask your cookbook what to make, then cook hands-free. Learn hands-free mode, read aloud, and the Next, Repeat that and What do I need buttons.

In short

  • ✦Open Ask and type or tap the microphone to ask for ideas, like "something quick under 500 calories".
  • ✦It only suggests recipes from your own cookbook, with links to open them.
  • ✦Turn on Hands-free and it listens again after every answer. Say "next" to hear the next step.
  • ✦From any recipe, tap Cook this with the voice assistant to start a walkthrough of that recipe.

Cook a recipe hands-free

  1. 1Start from the recipe. Open the recipe and tap Cook this with the voice assistant. The assistant starts walking you through it.
  2. 2Turn on Hands-free. Tick Hands-free at the top. Keep Read aloud on so each answer is spoken.
  3. 3Talk to it. Say "next", "repeat that", "how much butter?" or "what do I do if it's too thick?". It listens again after each answer.

Things to ask

The assistant knows every recipe in your cookbook, including ingredients, steps, tags and nutrition. Try:

  • "I want a high protein dessert"
  • "What can I make in 20 minutes?"
  • "What can I make with chicken and rice?"
  • "Read me the ingredients for the banana bread"
  • "Can I swap the butter for oil?"

The quick buttons

Once you're chatting, three buttons sit above the message box: Next for the next step, Repeat that to hear it again, and What do I need? for the ingredient list. They're handy when the kitchen is too loud for the microphone.

If the microphone doesn't appear

Voice uses your browser's built-in speech features. The microphone button shows in Chrome, Edge and Safari. If you don't see it, or it stops listening, allow microphone access for magicmeals.app in your browser settings, or type instead. Read aloud works in nearly every browser.

Questions

How do I use MagicMeals hands-free while cooking?

Open a recipe and tap Cook this with the voice assistant, then tick Hands-free. The assistant reads each step aloud and listens again after every answer, so you can say next, repeat that, or ask a question without touching your phone.

Why doesn't the assistant suggest new recipes from the internet?

It only uses recipes saved in your cookbook, so suggestions match what you like to cook. To give it more to choose from, save more recipes on the Add tab.
